Mucuna pruriens / Ojo de Llama is an annual climbing legume that
grows 3–18 m in height. It is indigenous to tropical regions, especially
Africa, India, and the West Indies. Its flowers are white to dark purple
and hang in long clusters (or racemes). The plant produces clusters of
pods which contain seeds known as mucuna beans.
Plant chemicals: The seeds also known as Velvet Bean are rich in
protein, carbohydrates, lipids, fiber, minerals and contains the very
powerfull amino acid L-Dopa (L-Dopa is a precursor of Dopamine),
The plant/seeds contain the bioactive alkaloids mucunine, mucunadine,
mucuadinine, pruriendine and nicotine, besides B-sitosterol, glutathione,
lecithin, oils, venolic and gallic acids also Serotonin, 5-MeO-DMT,
Bufotenine and 5-hydroxytryptamine.
Historical: The Mucuna plant has a tradition as a Ayurvedic aphrodesiac.
while today it is used as compont in many modern Aphrodesiac products
In Central America, Guatemala, Suriname, Brazil and India it is still
grown and known as a herbage crop by the indigenous people.
