Areca catechu is a very common grown palm tree in the tropics, grown for the mildly narcotic effects of its seeds when chewed. Betel Nuts popular use throughout Asia, India and the Pacific, makes it one of the most popular stimulants in the world. Areca Nut is aromatic and astringent and is said to intoxicate when first taken. The natives chew these nuts all day, cut into narrow pieces often chewed in combination with other ingredients (called a "quid"), like catechu gum, cardamom, anise seeds, cinnamon, tobacco or nutmeg rolled inside Betel leaf with some calcium hydroxide / lime. Effects: chewing of Betel Nuts causes mild stimulation and a feeling of well-being. Dosages of the powdered nut 1 to 2 teaspoonsful.
