Waldmeister, Waldmännchen, Waldtee, Leberkraut (German) Bedje Stro, Mottekruid, Woudkruid, Waldmeester, Wiegstro (Dutch) Reine des Bois, Belle Etoile (France) Sweet Woodruff, as the scientific name odoratum suggests was widely used in herbal medicine during the Middle Ages. Traditional use: Leaves - raw or cooked, or used as flavouring in cooling drinks or added to fruit salads. The leaves are soaked in white wine to make 'Maitrank, an aromatic tonic drink that is made in Alsace. A fragrant and delicious herbal tea is made from the green-dried leaves and flowers. The tea has a fresh, grassy flavour with gentle sedative properties. It very popular, mainly in Germany, to flavour wine (Maiwein), beer (Berliner Weisse), brandy, sausages and jam. Warning: Do not use this herb if you are taking conventional medicine for circulatory problems. Consult your physician before using. Not suitable for pregnant/ breastfeeding woman and children.
